Opinions about Music

As I do surveys at parishes all over the country, one consistent trend is that Catholics have an opinion about music. It’s either too fast, too slow, too new, too old, too in English, or too in Latin. Their parishes either use too much organ or not enough, too many guitars or not enough, drums are too loud or “how do we not have drums yet?”

Undignified Liturgical Music

I just listened to the last OSV Innovation Talk about Liturgical Music and I’m in love with his vision. It’s different than what anyone else is talking about and also my dream for Liturgical Music. It reminds me of a quote from Thérèse of Lisiuex. “My God, I choose all! I don’t want to be a saint by halves; I choose all that You will!” She’s talking about the spiritual life. She wants to be a Saint 100%. For me, regarding Liturgical Music, “I choose all.”

Music Participation

If I had a dollar for every time I heard the quote “Singing is praying twice” from St. Augustine, I’d have a lot of dollars. Music and singing are two of the most talked about things from Mass!
