A few years ago I had the privilege of going through a certification in Conversational Intelligence® with Judith Glaser. I learned a lot about the brain, neuroplasticity, conversations, and culture. The phrase she began each session with was “Words Create Worlds.” She expounded upon that by saying:
We’re living in a broken culture – one that seems to value division over unity and being right over being charitable. Conversations seem to begin with defensiveness – which as Byron Katie says is the first act of war.
So what’s the solution? According to Judith Glaser, if we want to change our culture, we need to change our conversations. It starts with the words we use – which as the Holy Father recently said – “can be kisses, caresses, medicine, but they can also be knives, swords or bullets.”
I encourage you this Lent to focus on your words, the impact they’re having, and the mark they’re leaving on the culture.
